Comedian Mpho Popps kicks off his Black in my day nationwide tour

Mpho Popps kicked off his nationwide tour, Black in My Day, at Port Elizabeth’s Opera House on Friday, 7th of June 2019. This will be followed by performances at a string of venues countrywide until August – in Klerksdorp, The Vaal, Witbank and Nelspruit right through to Sasolburg, Cape Town and Johannesburg. Mpho Popps will embark on his first ever one man national tour –where he takes on 14 cities and venues across South Africa.

BlackInMyDay is a nostalgic trip down memory lane of how Mpho grew up and all the experiences that have brought him to the point he is at today. It is a play on what life was like back in the day as a black man and navigating those challenges. It is reflective on life in the hood, and drawing a comparison to flourishing in the suburbs. He muses on the rising black middle class in South Africa and gives them a voice.

As a comedian, actor, businessman and cool dad extraordinaire, Mpho Poppsis a man of many talents. Boasting great local and global appeal as a talented comic, he has packed venues and line ups from his debut one man showExhibit A, his annual Mpho Popps Birthday Comedy Special, Blacks Only as well as a range of club tours and festivals. He has solidified his mark on the industry by generating plenty of laughs and leaving sore abs in towns and cities across the country.

These will certainly be nights to remember as he showcases the great delivery, a talent for languages as well as powerful punchlines that always leave crowds in stitches. Mpho Popps has the ability to take real life situations and make them relatable and interesting through humour. He combines his intellectual wit and plug on pop culture to create a world full of laughter. “My belief is that my talent and skill is not a show I put on but an embodiment of my true self,” he says. “This is who I am, all day, every day. My goal is to spread laughs and bring joy to audiences around the world.”

Not only has Mpho Popps captivated diverse audiences with his spectacular blend of humor and with right here at home, he has also had successful runs of his comedy shows in countries far and wide. He has showcased his global appeal with performances in L.A. (The Laugh Factory), Canada (Just for Laughs Comedy Festival), Nigeria (Lord of the Ribs Comedy Festival), Zimbabwe (Shoko Festival) and Kenya (A Night of a Thousand Laughs) as well as on stages in Lesotho, Botswana, Swaziland and Ghana.

Mpho Popps debuted as an actor on the hit drama serious Ayeye and starred in and executive produced a local film ThinaSobabili, which was selected to represent South Africa at the Oscars and the Golden Globes. He has also hosted the South African Music Awards, which solidified him as a comic with mass appeal on South Africa’s pop culture scene. His journey began in the casting line on the national comedy search TV show, So You Think You’re Funny? This platform gave him the audience and reach he needed to put himself out there as a serious comic.

His hard work, talent and originality haven’t gone unnoticed. Mpho Popps earned a nomination in the first-ever, Annual Comics’ Choice Awards as best newcomer where he went on to win the award for Best Breakthrough Act the following year.

So, if you’re looking for an evening of laughs and some great entertainment, head over to one of his Black In My Day shows in your city between June and August. You’ll have no regrets…
