In the spirit of giving back to communities, comedian Skhumba Hlophe teamed up with Diageo SA to donate 150 wheelchairs to five homes for people living with disabilities across Gauteng.

The wheelchairs will be handed over to the homes during August.

Skhumba Hlophe hosted two comedy shows titled, Walk this Way with Skhumba Hlophe, on 26 and 27 July at the Market Theatre and all proceeds from the show’s ticket sales went towards the purchase of wheelchairs.

“We are proud and excited to be a part of this wonderful initiative. The value of assisting and empowering citizens is one that is entrenched in the corporate culture of Diageo SA and all its employees. It is heartwarming to be able to make a real and positive difference in the life of someone who desperately needs it,” said Zanele Njapha, acting corporate relations manager of Diageo SA.

“Our company has a rich history in its support of various corporate social responsibility programmes. We always endeavour to deliver impactful and sustainable change to enrich the lives of communities in which we operate.”

“These wheelchairs will go a long way in ensuring that those who need them most will regain a sense of independence as they become mobile,” added Njapha.

A total of 30 wheelchairs will be handed over by Skhumba Hlophe and Diageo SA, in partnership with Kaya FM and the Market Theatre, to each of the following beneficiary homes during the August.

Olieven Disability Centre received their wheelchairs on 4 August, followed by Impumelelo Self-Help Centre in Springs on 11 August and then Filadelfia Secondary School in Soshanguve on 18 August. The remaining beneficiaries are Tshwane Empowerment Centre in Mabopane which will receive their donation on 25 August.

The fifth beneficiary is Tembisa’s Phuthanang Training Centre for the Disabled which will receive the wheelchairs on 31 August.
