Dezry Kay Biography, Singer, TV presenter, Dancer, Songwriter, Rapper and Performer

Dezry Kay real name Desiree Kekana was born in 1992 in GaMolapo, a small rural village near Zebediela in Limpopo. Being the daughter of a successful singer-mother and musician-father, she realized at a very young age that singing, dancing and performing was something she wanted to do, was passionate about it all and realized that music ran through her blood. It was part of her and as she couldn’t ignore it, she acted upon it.

Dezry’s Destination

Coming from a rural area like GaMolapo, the opportunities were scarce for a talented young girl with a dream of becoming a hip-hop artist. In 2009 Dezry moved to Gauteng to establish her music career. Where she met various underground and established artists such as Space Munna, Virus Crafts, Dream Team and soon started performing with them.

With her talent, confidence and looks, it didn’t take long before she started performing for big crowds. When South Africa hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2010, Dezry got to perform in front of thousands of soccer fans and tourists at the Market Theatre in Newtown. This catapulted her career and her well-known single “Rea Batsena”, was played on many local radio stations. Recently promoting her new single, ‘Ixhesha,’ Dezry was featured on Umhlobo Wenene FM with Phumzile Zonke on his show, ‘Jaiva Mzansi’ on Friday 22nd May 2015 and Kasi FM with DJ Phly Boy on his show ‘ Weekend Radio’ on Saturday 23rd May 2015. Lucky Radio, Alex Fm and Ukhozi FM to mention a few.

Dezry soon started doing corporate gigs too and performed for Virtec on their Road Show in 2012. The media started noticing this fiercely ambitious young women and Sunday Sun, Polokwane Express Newspaper and Star Studded Magazine recently published a profile of Dezry. She appeared on SABC 1 show YOTV Extension 4. In 2012 Dezry’s music video was one of the top voted by viewers on SABC show, Zoned.

Other television shows that featured Dezry includes Big Breakfast (SABC 1) and Sunrise (ETV). 2013 was a big year for Dezry, she performed at the Union Buildings on Freedom day for amongst others, President Jacob Zuma. She shared the stage with big names like Judith Sepuma, Black Motion, Dr Malinga and DJ Warras.

Dezry was also seen weekly on SABC 2 as a participant on an educational reality show It’s for Life on SABC 2 which was a 13 part series running from October 2013 to February 2014. She is currently shooting Kyknet series ’Getroud met Rugby’. Dezry collaborates with DJ’s, many other artists, performs as a solo artist at various functions, corporate functions and events. Dezry’s music can be described as commercial hip hop. She raps in English and a variety of African languages, Sepedi, Sesotho, Zulu, Afrikaans and Hindi. Dezry is one of the few Femcees (a term used to describe female rappers) in South Africa. Dezry can also design and custom make her show, with lyrics to suit the theme or audience and or function.

Dezry’s Determination

Her music is modern and edgy, she is proud of her heritage and rural background, Dezry often brings this into her lyrics and music videos. Dezry believes in inspiring young women in South Africa, believes that it doesn’t matter where you come from, believes you can be whatever you dream about, ‘so follow those dreams and never give up’, is Dezry’s firm belief.

Apart from music, Dezry is interested in acting, TV presenting and completed a course in television production. She is a Director of Dezry Kay Media and Promotions SA Pty Ltd and Ubuntu Print Company, all work that she fits in between recordings, song-writing, performances and her normal business day.
