Getting to know figure skater Ancio Van Tonder

Ancio van Tonder is without a doubt one of the most talented figure skaters in South Africa. The 20-year-old figure skater from Cape Town discovered his figure skating skills at the age of 3.

As a 3-year-old toddler, Ancio’s amazing talent was spotted by one of the elite coaches at Grand West Casino and was told to take professional lessons. 2 years later he went to SA nationals. At the age of 7, he received South African colours for competing in Zagreb, Croatia where he placed 1st.

Speaking of his skating career, van Tonder had to leave South Africa in order to pursue his skating career.

“I left home at the age of 12 to train in Canada with World renowned and Olympic coaches to further my skating career. Since then I have been 8 time South African National Champion, I have competed at multiple international competitions and have been on the Junior Grand Prix circuit for 3 years,” – Ancio said.

He further added that in 2014 he was part of a Reality TV show in India “Dare2Dance” ( similar concept to dancing with the stars ). He was hired as the professional skater and his celebrity partner came 2nd on the show.

“Later in 2014, I was approached by a Chinese entertainment company to perform as a Principal Skater in their Christmas and Cinderella ice show in Guangzhou, China for 2 months. During this contract I was approached to be in one of China’s top executive magazine’s for their 2015 Valentines Day cover story. My performance with the show led to me being on massive billboards and digital screens around Guangzhou.

Since 2015, he’s been performing with Holiday On Ice touring Europe for the last 3 years. He will be returning to Holiday On Ice for his fourth year in November 2018.

“In between my Holiday On Ice contracts I have given motivational speech’s to young aspiring athletes at sport awards evening’s. In 2017, I was invited by the Figure & speed skating association of Thailand to be their guest and coach to the Thai National Team for two weeks and will be returning shortly for three months.

I will be featured in this Spring’s September issue of the “Gay Pages” 2018.” – he concluded.
