After you’ve applied for the SRD grant, firstly, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) takes the information that you provided to them, such as your Name, Surname and ID Number and validates it by the Department of Home Affairs.

Secondly, your ID number will be matched against various databases including the South African Revenue Services (SARS), National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF). This process is done to make sure that you have no other grants or incomes coming to you. This is one of the reasons SASSA take some time before they can approve you.

Should SASSA discover that you receive other grants, you will not be approved. If you don’t receive any other incomes or money, SASSA will then move on to the next step in their verification processes.

The next step is for SASSA to submit your ID Number and Phone Number via a Fraud Risk Scoring process. This step is done to see if the applicant pose a risk to SASSA and what needs to be done about the risk.

Once all the validation steps have been completed, SASSA decides whether your SRD grant application is approved or disapproved. If you’ve been approved, SASSA will send you an SMS.
