The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has launched an online voter registration facility, allowing new voters to register and existing voters to update their address digitally.

The 2021 South African Municipal Elections will be held on 1 November 2021, giving South Africans an opportunity to elect councillors for all district, metropolitan and local municipalities in each of the country’s nine provinces.

These Municipal elections are held in South Africa every five years. If you are 18 years and older, you are urged to register to vote in the upcoming local elections in South Africa.

If you have internet access, you can also register online anywhere, anytime at registertovote.elections.org.za until proclamation of the elections, expected on 20 September 2021.

Who Can Register to Vote for the Municipal Elections 2021?

If you are a South African citizen and you are at least 16-years and older in possession of an SA ID (smartcard ID or green barcoded ID book), you can register to vote. However, only registered voters aged 18 or older on election day may vote.

How to Register to Vote Online in South Africa

  • Step 1: Go to https://registertovote.elections.org.za
  • Step 2: Click “Register to Vote Now”
  • Step 3: I Accept the Terms of Use and click “Begin application process”
  • Step 4: Enter your ID Number, First Names, Surname and Cellphone number and click “Continue”
  • Step 5: You will receive the one-time pin (OTP) sent to your cellphone number
  • Step 6: Confirm the “OTP and continue
  • Step 7: Confirm your address
  • Step 8: Upload a photo or file of your valid SA ID book
  • Step 9: Complete the registration process

You will then receive an SMS saying that they have receive your application and will notify you once it has been processed.

Once your application has been processed, you will receive another SMS stating that you have registered on e.g. “18/09/2021) in VD: 12345678 at Voting Station: Johannesburg High School“.

How to Check Your Registration Status Online

  • Step 1: Go to https://www.elections.org.za/
  • Step 2: Click on “Check my registration status”
  • Step 3: Then enter your ID number under My voter registration
  • Step 4: Then click “Check Now”

You will be able to view your registration status, voting station and ward details. Once you have registered to vote in a particular area you cannot vote outside of that area.
