MapiExceptionCallFailed

When mounting a database in the Exchange Server, you may encounter the following error: MapiExceptionCallFailed: Unable to mount database. (hr=0x80004005, ec=-515). This error happens mainly because of inconsistent or corrupt database files, connectivity issues, or server-side problems. It prevents the admin from bringing the database online.

In this blog, we will learn about manual steps to fix this issue. Additionally, we will also discuss Stellar Repair for Exchange, a third-party Exchange recovery tool. It can repair a corrupt database and resolve the MapiExceptionCallFailed error with just a few clicks.

Fixing the “MapiExceptionCallFailed: Error

Before proceeding with the solution, make sure that the account you use satisfies any of the following conditions:

  • Has the permission to perform Database role OR
  • Is a member of the Organization Management role group

Additionally, ensure having a recent backup of the corrupt database. It will help recover data quickly if anything goes wrong with the process.

Moving forward, here are the steps to resolve the common issue that can stall the working of the Exchange Server database if not attended to promptly.

1: Check the Database State

This error mostly surfaces when the database you want to mount is in a Dirty Shutdown state. Therefore, your foremost move should be to check the current state of the database with the help of the below Eseutil command in PowerShell. Don’t forget to log in as an administrator.

Eseutil /mh ” EDB FILE PATH\Database_Name.EDB”

Find the state. If it shows Clean Shutdown, go on to mount the database. If the output shows the database in Dirty Shutdown, follow the next step.

2. Soft Recovery of the Database

A dirty shutdown state indicates the possibility of a corrupted database or the presence of uncommitted log files in the Exchange server. In this case, soft recovery by using the Eseutil command is a feasible option to resolve the error. Here is the command.

Eseutil /r E00 /l “C:\Log file Path” /d “C:\Database Path”

However, it will work only in case the healthy log files are available.

After executing this command, run the earlier command again. It will help to find out the existing state of the database. Does it still show a Dirty Shutdown? Let’s move to the third step.

3. Scan through Database Logs

If the database fails to mount or is in a dirty shutdown state despite soft recovery, scan the log files by running the command below:

Eseutil /ml “Log File Path\Mailbox Database\E00”

Here, consider E00 as the beginning sequence of the logs. Notice the list of log files displayed because of the PowerShell command. Ensure the log files are clean and their status is OK. If the status is not OK, hard recovery is the last option left.

4. Hard Recovery of the Database

If the log files are not clean and their status is not OK, hard recovery is the last option. Here is the PowerShell command to perform a hard recovery on the corrupt database.

Eseutil /r /l ” Log File Path \E00″ /d “PATH T Eseutil /p <Database_Path >

This process can lead to data loss, as it purges the possibly corrupted data. To be on the safer side, make sure to back up the database before proceeding with hard recovery. Keep in mind that the database will remain hard-coded after performing this process. This will cause Microsoft to stop extending database support.

5: Mount the Database on the Server

Recheck the state of the database. If it shows the Clean Shutdown state, go on to mount it on the server by using the command below:

Mount-Database –Identity <database name> –Confirm:$False

You may also use the Exchange Admin Center for this purpose.

These manual steps may prove effective in resolving the MapiExceptionCallFailed error. However, more than doing good, they can cause damage to your database in terms of data loss, data corruption, excessive time consumption, etc. To avoid such hassles and ensure hassle-free data restoration from a corrupted database, you can use an Exchange recovery tool. Let’s know more about it.

After buying the software, you can start recovering and restoring files from the corrupt database to the target location in a specified format. The entire process is easy and quick. You simply need to follow the step-by-step guide to recover the inaccessible or corrupt Exchange database files. You may also try the free trial version of the software if you want to only scan and preview recoverable Exchange mailbox items.

Conclusion

While using Exchange Server, you may come across the “MapiExceptionCallFailed” error. It may happen due to uncommitted log files, corrupt database files, connectivity problems, or server-side issues. It is possible to fix this error manually by going through several steps using PowerShell commands. It will require you to keep checking the status of the database if it is in a clean or dirty shutdown state.

In case of the latter, continue trying soft recovery and then hard recovery of the database. Once the database is in a clean state, mount the server and resume working on the database. These steps can fix the error, but at a cost. In case you proceed with the hard recovery of the database, it will lead to significant data loss and hard coding of the database.

This will prevent Microsoft from supporting the Exchange database anymore. To avoid such hassles and to ensure a smooth recovery process, it is wise to use an exchange recovery tool. Stellar Repair for Exchange is the right software to help you. It enables quick and flawless database recovery without affecting the data. Loaded with features and easy to use, this tool is in wide demand among small and large organizations for database recovery.
