KZN government wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to give late Joseph Shabalala an official state funeral

The KwaZulu-Natal MEC for arts and culture, Hlengiwe Mavimbela, is calling for a state funeral for the late Ladysmith Black Mambazo founder Joseph Shabalala.

Joseph Shabalala died on Tuesday morning in a Pretoria hospital, Life Eugene Marais Hospital, after a long illness. He was 78-years-old.

Speaking to ewn, the provincial government said Bab’Shabalala is a legend who should be given a befitting send-off.

“As the provincial government, we will now start with plans to engage the President, write to him and ask that Shabalala be honoured with a special funeral because the whole world will be watching his funeral,” said KZN Arts and Culture MEC Hlengiwe Mavimbela.

Phathisa Msuyo, spokesperson for the MEC, said the funeral is set to take place on February 22 in Ladysmith, KwaZulu-Natal.
