Five Minutes With PRESENTER SEARCH ON 3’s Peelo Mookodi

PRESENTER SEARCH ON 3's Peelo Mookodi

In a shocking double elimination, Presenter Search on 3 finalists Peelo Mookodi and Shannon Leibach became the next contestants to be eliminated from the reality competition which has searched the country for three new faces to join SABC 3.

After a challenging Expresso takeover, the contestants were given a taste of the good life with their very own segment on SABC 3’s flagship lifestyle magazine show Top Billing as they got a chance to showcase fine dining, celebrity interviews and cutting-edge design in the way Top Billing is famous for.

Unfortunately, Peelo Mookodi was eliminated from the show last night in what was the most dramatic episode of the season so far.   “You’ve got this almost rehearsed beauty queen thing about you. It works, I just don’t know if it does you any favours when you’re presenting a show. It does look good, I don’t know if it works for TV,” DJ Fresh told Peelo moments before her elimination. Meanwhile, Patience Stevens tells Peelo that “You came into this competition with an advantage that you have presented before, and when we look at people we look at their potential for growth and you should be so much more ahead of the other people and you’re not.”

Win a Home 2018 will be a stand-alone show on SABC3 Prime Time, airing Thursday nights at 19h30, starting on the 20th of September.

This season will be based in the Western Cape, with three new Design Duo contestants decorating three identical penthouse apartments at the Paardevlei Lifestyle Estate in Somerset West to compete for a grand prize of R100 000. Win a Home has partnered with Balwin Properties as well as a number of exciting sponsors to allow the Design Duos to turn their white-box apartments into bespoke designer homes.

Three of South Africa’s top home décor magazine editors will once again give inspiration and direction to each duo. Each of the three participating design pairs will be assigned a magazine title, who will guide them through the design process and will each do a feature spread on their mentee’s completed apartment.

This is an opportunity for passionate and qualified interior designers, with less than five years of professional experience, to make their mark in the interior design industry. Win a Home spring-boarded the careers of the previous designer winners Donald Nxumalo (2014), Jacoline Sema (2015), Rudolph Jordan (2016) and Brad Muttitt and Abiah Mahlase (2017) who have since made a big impact on South African design scene.

Jozi’s Newest Art Gallery Opens with John Moore Exhibition

John Moore Exhibit at Cradle Contemporary Art Fair

Johannesburg’s newest art gallery – the Afropolitan Gallery at Victoria Yards – has opened with a stunning exhibition of new works by John Moore which will run until August 1.

Moore’s passion for wildlife and natural heritage visually fuses themes of spirituality and mysticism and, in addition to depictions of wildlife and the plight of endangered species, his work often also includes references to Southern Africa’s ancient San- and Koi- bushman rock painting heritage.

Moore’s show at the Afropolitan Gallery is titled In the Beginning in which he engages primarily with a coloured pastel medium yet there is a body of classical work from this master print maker in etchings, linocuts and mixed media.

Schooled at St John’s College in Johannesburg, Moore’s childhood was marked by long holidays and explorations of South Africa, particularly the Kruger National Park where he
was taught to love and appreciate wildlife in every form, and learned to enjoy not only the wonder of the “Big Five” but also the complexity and detail of “the little things”.

Moore remembers sitting at waterholes for hours armed with binoculars and nature books. He studied birds, trees and insects and over the years his appreciation for detail and micro organisms was firmly fixed into his growing imagination.

Moore also learned to appreciate the different ecosystems that inhabit Southern Africa, visiting the contrasting coastal forests of KwaZulu Natal and the arid deserts of Namibia, and he was also able to witness and appreciate the indigenous people of the country and its neighbours, sharing and listening to tales of the fauna and flora around the fire.

Five things you didn’t know about the selfie – Huawei

Huawei P20 Pro

Akhram Mohamed, Marketing Director, Huawei Consumer Business Group South Africa shares 5 things we didn’t know about the selfie.

The selfie. Love it or hate it, it is undeniable that it has become a central element of global culture, transcending boundaries of geography, religion, and status. Nothing embodies the influence of technology on our lives more than the phenomenon of the selfie. Here are five fascinating facts you probably didn’t know about this modern-day marvel.

  1. The birth of the selfie

Believe it or not, the very first selfie was taken way back in 1839 by an American photographer, Robert Cornelius. His purpose was not purely narcissistic, however, as he was taking the photo to try out a new lighting technique. Unlike the ‘quickie’ selfies of today, experts estimate that Cornelius would have had to stay in the same position for three to 15 minutes to get the shot. Some historians have also argued that self-portraits have been an important part of art for centuries, and well-known painters like Rembrandt and Van Gogh were big fans of this medium.

  1. What’s in a name?

In 2013, Oxford Dictionaries included the word ‘selfie’ in its online dictionary, and even went so far as to award this term the accolade of Word of the Year. In the previous year, Time Magazine had included the word ‘selfie’ in its list of ‘Top 10 buzzwords’, and in 2014 this term was officially accepted for use in the game Scrabble. The word ‘selfie’ was first used in Australia back in 2003 when a young guy took a picture of his face, showing how he had hurt his lip while drunk, and shared it. This social-media friendly term reflects the tendency in Australian English to add the ‘-ie’ ending to words to form new slang terms – ‘barbie’ for barbeque or braai is another example.
