NSFAS, which stands for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme, is a South African government student financial aid scheme which provides financial aid to undergraduate students to help pay for the cost of their tertiary education after finishing high school. NSFAS was established in 1996 according to theย National Student Financial Aid Scheme Act (Act 56 of 1999), replacing the Tertiary Education Fund of South Africa (TEFSA) in 1999. From 1993 to 2000, TEFSA was the primary non-profit company in terms of Section 21 of the Companies Act and ceased to operate in July 2000. All existing loans on the TEFSA books were transferred to NSFAS.
