South African singer and performer Makhadzi received a hero’s welcome at OR Tambo International Airport today, following her triumph at the 2024 BET Awards held in Los Angeles, where she won the prestigious “Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act” award.

The arrival event was graced by the presence of Chief Director Tsholofelo Lejaka (Arts Culture Promotion and Development) from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, who commended Makhadzi for her remarkable achievement that brought pride not only to Mzansi but to the entire African continent.

As Makhadzi walked through the arrivals gate, proudly holding her BET Award, she was met with cheers and applause from fans, media, and dignitaries. The atmosphere was charged with excitement and national pride.

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, who coudn’t attend due to his cabinet compulsory commitment had this to say, “Today, we celebrate Makhadzi, a shining star whose talent and hard work have not only earned her a well-deserved BET Awards international accolade but also put South African and African music on the global map. Her success is a testament to the power of perseverance and the richness of our cultural heritage. We are incredibly proud of her as she remain a pillar of our diverse nation.”

Makhadzi expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for this incredible recognition. Winning a BET award is a dream come true, and I am honoured to represent South Africa and Africa on such a prestigious platform. Thank you to all my fans for their unwavering support, and to everyone who believed in me. This is just the beginning!”

Monde Twala, Senior Vice President & Co-General Manager of Paramount Africa & Lead BET International, added, “Makhadzi’s win at the BET Awards is a historic moment for African music and culture. It showcases the immense talent and potential that exists within our continent. We are committed to supporting and promoting African artists on the global stage, and Makhadzi’s success is a shining example of what can be achieved.”

The welcome ceremony has been a powerful reminder of the unity and pride that Makhadzi’s achievement has inspired across South Africa and beyond. Her journey continues to motivate South African upcoming artists and once more reaffirms the country’s position as a powerful enabler of creative talent.
