TIME Magazine has revealed the cover for their 2019 “optimists issue” – a beautiful oil painting of a child produced by South African artist, Nelson Makamo.

The piece, titled “Visions of a limitless future”, is the first magazine cover that Nelson Makamo has ever produced.
Speaking to TIME magazine, the award-winning fine artist said was his first time painting a cover in his career. “It scared me because, even though I’ve been working for a long time, it felt like a debut,” said Makamo.
“Art is worthy of our interrogation and is in fact an antidote for our times,” writes Ava DuVernay, guest-editor of Time’s second special issue devoted to optimism.
“In the issue, we celebrate and suggest ways that one can find inspiration in our present moment through the work of artists who carve a path for us all. Whether a filmmaker or a photographer, an author or an actress, a poet or a painter, these pages are filled with people who use art as a weapon for dynamic optimism (sic)” – TIME Magazine wrote on Instagram.
36-year-old fine artist, who was born in Modimolle, Limpopo province, said his artistic impulse kicked in early. He just had this urge to draw, to make marks.
This is TIME’s second issue devoted to optimism. The issue focuses on “34 people changing how we see our world.”
