Five Minutes With Thabiso Makhubela:

Why do you think a show like ‘Win A Home’ is so entertaining to watch?

Everybody loves a good reality show. Win A Home is entertaining because of its hugely unpredictable nature. Every week viewers get to fall in love with the design duos for different reasons but never know how their favourite duo will perform in their challenge.

What drew you to host a show like ‘Win A Home’?

I am obsessed with lifestyle shows. I have watched so many of them and it’s a space where I really enjoy playing in. It’s great to see the progression of something like a home on a reality show and how fast changes are made week after week. This was such a natural fit for me.

What, in your opinion, do the design duos battle with the most when starting the design process?

The design duos are always having to battle with what is functional and what looks good so they often find themselves in a position where they have all the amazing ideas but have to scale down to deliver on time and on brief. It’s something every contractor deals with and seeing what that process leads to is entertaining.

If you were to design an apartment of your own on the show, what approach would you take to the overall theme of the apartment?

I am a simple guy so I would go for something very minimalistic – something with a lot of black and white with touches of wood.

The show is live every Thursday night. What do you love the most about live television?

There is a thrill about doing live television. Essentially, what you see is what you get. It forces you to just get into the space and be as real as you can be – and that’s something that viewers really appreciate.

As the ‘Win A Home’ finale draws near, what can fans expect from you in 2019?

Next year, I will still be presenting on The Expresso Show every morning. I love that place and the energy around it so make sure you wake up to your feel-good breakfast show every morning. But, I will also be venturing into some charity work. I am launching a foundation with a specific focus on youth empowerment across Southern Africa. I am really excited about this.

Meanwhile, the design duos await the results of the two prizes in what promises to be an exhilarating finale this Thursday. In the main Judges’ Choice prize, our esteemed judges will critique every single aspect of the designer homes and will essentially decide which duo will walk away with the R100 000 grand prize. Then, the team who accumulated the most votes throughout the season in the viewers competition will win a R20 000 cash prize.

But the big winner is the lucky viewer who, from the six finalists randomly drawn, will win their choice of one of the three penthouse apartments, as decorated by the design duos, at Balwin Properties’ Paardevlei Lifestyle Estate. It’s a prize valued at over R3 million, which makes it the largest prize on South African television. Win a Home is truly a show that changes lives forever.

Win a Home, proudly brought to you by Capitec Bank and Private Property, culminates with the season’s grand finale this Thursday at 19:30 on SABC 3.
