Rhino Blog : The world’s rhinos are in trouble and award-winning wildlife television presenter Bonné de Bod is on a quest to find out why and more importantly, what’s being done.

RHINO BLOG: Asia
Tuesday, July 25, at 10.53 with repeats every two hours
People’s Weather (DStv Channel 180)
Bonné tackles Asia head-on in this heart-stopping episode where she travels to the “transit” and “destination” countries: Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China.  She hunts for rhino horn product in Asian markets and looks at the impact enforcement is having in the airports and harbours as well as the use of rhino horn once it is through.  From Hanoi to Hong Kong this episode is a fast-paced dramatic look at the Asian demand for the illegal product.

RHINO BLOG: Zama, Rhino Monitor
Friday, July 28, at 10.45 with repeats every two hours
People’s Weather (DStv Channel 180)
Zama Ncube has a dream job!  He monitors rhinos for a living.  Zama works for researchers in a wilderness reserve in an undisclosed part of South Africa (the reserve remains “undisclosed” for security reasons due to the rhino poaching crisis).  One would think it would be easy to keep tabs on large beasts like rhinos, but they are not as slow-moving as one would think!  Zama has a motorbike to help him keep tabs as well as a handset receiver to pick signals from their collars.  His job is to not disturb but to keep a distance and monitor them.  Zama shows Bonné a day in his life and takes her deep into the scrub to see the wild rhinos he monitors.

RHINO BLOG: Genet Jackson
Saturday, July 29, at 10.45 with repeats every two hours
People’s Weather (DStv Channel 180)
Bonné finds herself on a remote wild animal path in the middle of an African game reserve.  This time though, she’s not here to look at rhinos, she’s here to find out more about the social media phenomenon who’s been seen hitching rides rodeo-style on wild rhinos!  Carefully placed research camera traps have puzzled the park’s ecologists who are now analysing the pictures to learn more about this strange behaviour.  The scientists share their research findings with Bonné.

RHINO BLOG: Meeting Mark Boucher
Sunday, July 30, at 10.45 with repeats every two hours
People’s Weather (DStv Channel 180)
The world’s rhinos are in trouble and wildlife television presenter Bonné de Bod is on a quest to find out why and more importantly, what’s being done. Mark Boucher has championed rhinos since a devastating injury on the cricket field left him unable to play cricket. Mark invites Bonné to spend time with him and cricketing legends, Graham Smith and Kevin Pietersen, out in the wild where they collect DNA samples from rhinos in his quest to collect valuable rhino DNA to add to the RhODIS (Rhino Index Database System) database, which will be stored and used if these rhinos are ever killed for their horn.
