Local actress and television host Khanyi Mbau is broken, beaten and destitute in the trailer for local film called ‘Red Room.’ The trailer for her new thriller was released and she said she cannot wait for fans to watch it.
In Red Room, Mbau plays the character of Zama Marawa, wife to a wealthy husband who loses it all, who is thrown into the frightening South African underworld of human trafficking.
“I am a woman who was once rich but it all came tumbling down and I found myself without anything. I had to start from the bottom again, doing Mzansi Magic movies, and I realised that pride cannot take you anywhere,” – Khanyi described the character she plays.
Speaking to Channel24 about the movie, Khanyi Mbau said: “This is quite dark, it’s about sexual abuse, it’s about physical abuse, and it’s a dark film. I mean, probably just the first 15 minutes of the film are the lightest part, the happiest part, then throughout the film it’s just journey of survival.”
“It’s scary to go to those places but it is what is necessary to portray this character. I’ll probably need therapy after this,” – Mbau added.
Khanyi Mbau has starred in local films such as Happiness is a Four-Letter Word and Frank and Fearless.
The Red Room will be released in cinemas in March 2019.
