The media mogul Basetsana Kumalo is reportedly planning to sue the magazine for defamation and reputational damages with costs.

Basetsana and her husband, Romeo Kumalo, are reportedly launching proceedings to sue Drum magazine.

This comes after the media mogul, who is this week’s cover star, failed to prevent the publication of the new issue.

According to IOL, the couple’s lawyer, Ian Levitt, said the magazine had chosen to publish an image of one of their children in an article about Bassie, who is allegedly in hospital for “liposuction gone wrong”.

In the early hours of Friday morning, Bassie and Romeo launched an urgent interdict to stop Drum from printing at the Johannesburg High Court.

Judge Denise Fisher reportedly refused to grant the order because the picture of their child had already been posted online.

Bassie described the article as “lies”.

She told SowetanLive: “Sadly I couldn’t get an urgent interdict on the lies on the lead story that I had ‘botched liposuction’, as the judge says the ‘horse has bolted and the magazine is already on shelf in CT.”

According to the publication, Drum editor, Thandi Mthethwa, said she stands by the cover story.
