The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) administers the Child Support Grant (CSG), which is given to the needy to support their children. If you are needy, you can get a Sassa child grant to help you raise the child you look after.

Caregivers of orphaned children are eligible to apply for the CSG Top-up which means they will receive R480 plus an additional R240 bringing the total amount received to R720 per child each month.

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced that all permanent social grants will increase by at least 5% in the next financial year. The Finance Mister announced the Sassa social grants increases for 2023 during his 2023 National Budget Speech on Wednesday, 22 February 2023.

Here Are The Sassa Grant Increases For 2023

The increases to social grants are as follows:

  • The old age grant will increase from R1985 to R2085
  • The old age grants for those over the age of 75 will increase to R2105
  • Grants for war veterans increase to some R2105 from R2005
  • Disability grants will increase to R2085
  • The Foster care grant increases by 5.1% to R1125
  • Care dependency grants rise to R2085 from R1985
  • Child support grants will increase by 5.2% to R505
  • Grant-in-aid rises to R505 – up by 5.2%

How Do I Qualify For Sassa Child Grant in South Africa?

  •  A child must be under the age of 18 years
  • Not be cared for in a state institution
  • Live with the primary caregiver who is not paid to look after the child. Both you and the child must live in South Africa.

How to Apply for Sassa Child Grant in South Africa?

    1. Go to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office nearest to where you live and bring the following:
      • your 13 digit-bar-coded identity document (ID) and the child’s birth certificate. If you don’t have an ID or the child’s birth certificate:
        • you must complete an affidavit in a standard SASSA format in the presence of a Commissioner of Oaths who is not a SASSA official.
        • Bring the following documents:
          • a sworn statement by a reputable person (e.g. councillor, traditional leader, social worker, minister of religion) who knows the applicant and child
          • proof that you have applied for an ID and/or birth certificate at the Department of Home Affairs
          • a temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs (if applicable)
          • baptismal certificate if available
          • road to health clinic card if available
          • school report if available.
      • Proof of any maintenance you receive for the child.
      • Proof of your earnings.
      • Your marriage certificate (if applicable).
      • If you are divorced, the court order saying that you have custody of the child.
      • If one or both parents are dead or missing, the death certificate of the deceased or proof that the parent is missing, e.g. a missing person’s report from the police.
    2. Complete the application form in the presence of the SASSA official (note that only you as the applicant or a SASSA official may complete the application form).
    3. You will be given a receipt. Keep it as proof that you applied.

How Do I Receive My Sassa Child Support Grant in 2023?

SASSA pays the Child support grant to you through one of the following methods:

      • Cash at a specific pay point on a particular day
      • Electronic deposit into your bank or Postbank account (the bank may charge you for the service)
        an institution acting as administrator of the grant.

Please note that if you are unable to collect the grant money yourself, you can appoint a procurator at the SASSA office, or give someone power of attorney to collect the grant on your behalf.
