Johannesburg Zoo, also known as Joburg Zoo is one of the most popular local tourist attractions, situated in the leafy northern suburb of Johannesburg. The Johannesburg Zoo covers 55 hectares of land and was founded in 1904, when land was donated to the public for recreational use by the firm of the late Hermann Ekstein. The Joburg Zoo is home to thousands of species including birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals and invertebrates.   • Adults: R115 per person
  • Children (between 3 – 12 years): R68 per child
  • Pensioners: R68 per person
  • Students (week days only and student card is required): R68 per student
  • School groups (Monday – Friday): R42 per child
  • Welfare groups (Monday – Friday): R47 per person
  • Zoo Trot entry: R68 per person
  • Ferry Rides: Weekdays – R5 per person | Weekends – R10 per person
  • Parking: Cars and mini-vans – R16 per car | Busses – R27 per vehicle

Joburg Zoo Trading Hours

The Joburg Zoo is open 364 days a year. Monday to Sunday and Public Holidays (including Christmas and New Years): 08:30 – 17:30. Last entry to the zoo: 16:00.

Joburg Zoo Animal Feeding Times

Feeding times guarantee plenty of action and photo opportunities. According to Vibescout, animal feeding times at the Joburg Zoo are as follows:

  • Chimpanzees are fed at 10am.
  • Vultures are only fed in view on Sundays at 11am.
  • Ground Hornbills are fed at 11:15am.
  • Wild Dogs and Cheetahs are fed at 12:15am.
  • Crocodile talks and feeding in summer, at 1pm.
  • Gorillas are fed at 2pm.

Things to carry to the zoo

When planning to visit the zoo, you can take your own food to the Zoo. You can include other items such as water, sunglasses, camera and wear comfortable shoes for walking. Pets are not allowed inside the Zoo. Other prohibited things on Zoo grounds include grills, roller blades, animal foods, skateboards and bicycles.

Alcohol at the zoo is allowed in private events, however, it must be limited to a specific venue. It is prohibited to walk around the zoo with alcoholic beverages.
