South Africa’s cheapest cars are in high demand because consumers who are struggling to make ends meet feel pessimistic about the economy.

We have compiled a list of the ten most affordable new passenger cars in Mzansi. Starting at R149, 900 and going all the way up to R176, 999, it’s a hefty price range.

The list consists of 1 Renault, 2 BAICs, 2 Mahindra’s, and 5 Suzuki’s. All ten vehicles are compact hatchbacks equipped with air conditioning, and nine of them use conventional gear shifters.

Cheaper car safety is always a concern for consumers. None of the 10 vehicles we’ve chosen have been evaluated by the AA’s #Safer Cars for Africa programme, therefore they don’t have a star rating. However, they all come standard with anti-lock brakes (ABS) and electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) systems.

We have calculated the monthly payments for each of the 10 loans. Financing for 60 months at the prime interest rate (7.75%) is based on the quoted price for that model with a 10% down payment. The setup and administration costs are not included.

In terms of pricing, the BAIC D20 Hatch 1.3 Comfort is the most affordable brand-new passenger car in South Africa.

One can expect to pay R149, 990 for a BAIC D20 Hatch 1.3 Comfort.

BAIC, or Beijing Automotive Group Co., is the sixth largest automaker in China. It began offering vehicle sales in South Africa in 2018.

A 1.3-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with natural aspiration provides the power for the D20 Hatch 1.3 Comfort, which results in 75 kW of output and 128 Nm of torque. The front wheels receive power from the manual transmission.

Despite being a compact hatchback, BAIC claims that the vehicle consumes 6.8 liters of gas every hundred kilometers driven.

The 45-liter gasoline capacity allows for a maximum range of 661 kilometers.

Although it offers basic features like air conditioning, a CD player, a four-speaker sound system, power windows, and power side blind spot mirror, the D20’s specifications are rather basic.

There are anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), two front airbags, and anchors for installing child safety seats using the ISOFIX system.

When it was out in early 2020, the Suzuki S-Presso 1.0 GL was the cheapest automobile in South Africa. However, its price has gone risen since then, and the BAIC D20 has taken its position.

The S-power Presso’s originates from a three-cylinder, 1.0-liter gasoline engine that sucks air in on its own. It generates 50kW/90Nm, which is transmitted through a five-speed manual transmission to the front wheels.

The Japanese automobile firm boasts that the gas mileage is an outstanding 4.9 L/100 km, which means it can go 551 km on its 27-liter fuel tank.

The hatchback offers air conditioning, power front windows, a back parking sensor, and a digital instrument cluster.

There are ISOFIX child seat fixings in the back, two front airbags, and ABS with EBD for safety.

The S-Presso comes with a service plan for two years or 30,000 km and a guarantee for five years or 200,000 km.

The base model of the KUV100 has a three-cylinder, naturally aspirated 1.2-liter gasoline engine with 61 kW/115 Nm and a five-speed manual transmission.

Mahindra says that the KUV100 uses 5.9 L/100 km of gas, which means that its 35-liter tank can take it 593 kilometres.

The Mahindra hatch has two front airbags, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX child seat fixings in the back.

The KUV100 doesn’t have a service plan as standard, but it does come with a three-year/100,000 km vehicle warranty and a five-year/150, 00 km powertrain warranty.

BAIC says that the 1.3 will use 6.8 L/100 km, which will give it the same range of 661 km.

The Renault Kwid is the cheapest automobile in SA. South Africans enjoy the Renault Kwid, which is built in India.

The French carmaker’s inclusion on the list of South Africa’s 10 cheapest automobiles has been a popular choice since it entered to the country in 2016.

The Kwid has a three-cylinder, 1.0-liter, naturally aspirated gasoline engine that puts out 50kW/91Nm and is mated with a five-speed manual transmission.

Renault says it only uses 4.7 litres of gas per 100 miles and can drive 596 kilometres on its 28-liter gas tank.

The basic Kwid sports a digital instrument cluster, air conditioning, and a two-speaker radio that can link to Bluetooth, AUX, and USB.

It includes ABS with EBD and two airbags in the front.

The Kwid comes with a five-year/150-thousand-kilometer guarantee, however it does not come with a service package.

New Dual jet engine technology is featured in the Celerio’s powertrain. The 49kW/89Nm three-cylinder gasoline engine is mated with a five-speed manual transmission.

Suzuki says that the Celerio will only use 4.4 L of gas to go 100 km. This means that the compact hatchback can drive just shy of 800 km on its 35-liter gas tank, which is pretty astounding.

The cheapest trim of the hatchback doesn’t have electric windows or a radio, but it does come with air conditioning and sensors to help you park in the back.

Electronic Stability Control, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX child seat mounts are all safety features.
