Mzansi Magic gives Zabalaza the boot

The Mzansi Magic soapie will be on our screens until April 2016 – and then it will disappear.

Mzansi Magic has decided to can it’s soapie, Zabalaza. The show, which features stars like Nonhle Thema, Zandile Msuthwana, and Rosie Motene, had low ratings compared to other soapies.

According to Sunday Sun, the actors and crew were shocked when they were informed about this. Sources told the paper that the show’s viewership went from 700,000 to less than 200,000, and the channel could no longer fund the soapie.

A source revealed: “There were issues in terms of the direction the show was taking. The problem with the show is that executive producers were told to shape up or ship out. Executive producers decided to change the script but still failed dismally. They started writing on their own, but they ran out of ideas and couldn’t attract viewers.”

Another insider told the paper that the producers informed the actors and crew the show was going to be discontinued, and no explanations were given. “Producers told actors they should come up with their own storyline on how they want to exit the show because they didn’t have any ideas…”

A statement released by Mzansi Magic revealed that the show will end in April 2016. Director of Local Interest Channels at M-Net, Nkateko Mabaso, said they’re proud of the success the show has had in its three-year run.
