Two of our greatest musicians Brenda Fassie and Brown Dash remembered on this day.

One was a pioneering Pop icon known across the world as the “Queen of African Pop” The other was Soweto’s pride, a young man hailing from Zola who put Kwaito on the map for several years.

We’re talking about non-other than Brenda Fassie and Brown Dash who both passed away on the 9th of May 2004 and 2012.

On the 9th of May 2004, South Africa woke up to the sad news of the passing of Brenda Fassie, for many, she was an icon and one of the few black female singers in our country who was successful beyond measure.

It’s difficult to believe that it’s been almost 13-years since she passed away.

Our favourite track from the legendary singer is probably her 1980’s hit song Ag Shame Lovey (Mido do)

A lot of our current musicians have derived a lot of inspiration from the late legend. The likes of Nomuzi has even dubbed herself as Young Mabrr a nickname that was given to Brenda Fassie by her fans during her heydays.

We’ve also heard numerous local rappers sample a few of Brenda’s songs, an ode to the amount of respect our new artists have for the late singer.

Brown Dash also passed away on the 9th of May 2012 he was undoubtedly one of South Africa’s most favourite kwaito stars and his passing came as a huge blow for the Kwaito fraternity.

Rap stars such as the likes of Riky Rick have paid homage to the Kwaito star by mentioning him in his single Nafukwa.

Even Zola wrote a tribute song to his fellow artist in his 2014 album Intathakusa.
