Tony X releases much-anticipated debut single, #WhatYouNeed

The trio (Tony X, D.EE XCLSV and Manu WorldStar) all part of the Punchline crew, have collaborated on several songs before but on On What You Need, they bring something completely different to the table, fusing the sounds of dancehall and afro pop to produce a unique sound unlike anything out on the local urban music scene.

Tony explains how the song came about, “Producers Steve Yunivers & Newtone Major have been trying to collaborate with the Punchline boys for a minute and this was the first idea that they presented. The song changed a few times as it had a sample hook that they asked me to improve, which I did. I had originally written a verse but it needed a different flavor to it and I wanted people to also discover a different side of Dee & Manu. So I sent them the joint & immediately they knew we had something. After the vocals were laced, it still needed a little bit more sting in production. That’s where PRxFND came in, everything I do has to be touched by PRxFND & he elevated it for real.”

Last week’s show was a huge success for Tony and marked the beginning of his Punchlive Unplugged series of shows with a full band which he will throw once a month.

“As an upcoming artist it’s not easy getting bookings,” Tony explains. “So I took matters into my own hands, and booked myself & my team. As an RnB artist I’ve always wanted to be on stage with a live band, I believe I am a better live performer than on MP3. The turn out was overwhelming, I was humbled by the people that came to show love. I had no music out besides the collaboration EP with Punchline but people still came to show love. That was a big deal for me”

“The overall vision of my career is to be the king of the new age RnB music in South Africa & Africa.”- Tony

Tony has some big plans for 2018: “I’ve been in a hyperbolic chamber in 2017, working on myself and my music. 2018 is the year to unlock the RnB Gita. The overall vision of my career is to be the king of the new age RnB music in South Africa & Africa. 2018 is the year Tony X officially introduces himself to the world. We here to stay baby!”
