Win a Home 2018 will be a stand-alone show on SABC3 Prime Time, airing Thursday nights at 19h30, starting on the 20th of September.

This season will be based in the Western Cape, with three new Design Duo contestants decorating three identical penthouse apartments at the Paardevlei Lifestyle Estate in Somerset West to compete for a grand prize of R100 000. Win a Home has partnered with Balwin Properties as well as a number of exciting sponsors to allow the Design Duos to turn their white-box apartments into bespoke designer homes.

Three of South Africa’s top home décor magazine editors will once again give inspiration and direction to each duo. Each of the three participating design pairs will be assigned a magazine title, who will guide them through the design process and will each do a feature spread on their mentee’s completed apartment.

This is an opportunity for passionate and qualified interior designers, with less than five years of professional experience, to make their mark in the interior design industry. Win a Home spring-boarded the careers of the previous designer winners Donald Nxumalo (2014), Jacoline Sema (2015), Rudolph Jordan (2016) and Brad Muttitt and Abiah Mahlase (2017) who have since made a big impact on South African design scene.

The Top 9 took over the Expresso morning show last Friday and while some slotted into the fast-paced thrills of live TV effortlessly, others realised that live TV is a beast not every presenter can tackle.

Ultimately, Palesa Tembe, Ryle De Morny and Laurina Machite were announced as the worst-performing contestants of the episode and got some tough love from our esteemed panel of judges Jeannie D, DJ Fresh, Sbusiso Kumalo and Patience Stevens.

Palesa’s hesitation before her live links, due to missing her cues, caused a few clumsy moments on air which the judges believed spoiled her presentation. Ryle appeared to be overshadowed during his gym segment which made for a few awkward interactions with his guest. This and his lack of confidence in a space he is passionate about made for an underwhelming segment. However, it was Laurina’s lack of personal interaction and on-air fumble when the director told her to finish off an interview, which caused her to lose focus and come to an abrupt stop that ultimately cost her a spot in the competition.

In their first elimination task, the Top 10 headed out to the Emerald Resort and Casino where each of them were asked to highlight one of the resort’s exciting activities on camera.

While some contestants rose up to the challenge and made the most out of some difficult shooting scenarios, others failed to deliver. Ultimately, Thabiso Makhubela, Shannon Leibach and Zikhona Mda, as the worst-performing contestants of the episode, were given some tough love by judges Jeannie D, DJ Fresh and Patience Stevens.

Thabiso struggled to wow the directors with his insert exploring the a river cruise. His double-barrelled questions confused his subject which ultimately became his shortfall during the insert. Shannon, the Disney fanatic, attempted to take viewers on the perfect first date by giving audiences tips and tricks they need to win over their crush. However, Shannon’s attempt to connect with the viewers at home appeared too forceful and unnatural which ultimately hampered the quality of his insert. However, it was Zikhona’s inability to make the most out of her interaction with the resort’s reluctant lemurs which ultimately saw her booted from the competition.
