‘I was in the Closet’ is a new TV show aimed at addressing issues in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender/transsexual and intersexed (LGBTI) community in South Africa, as well as creating a safe platform for people to speak about their experiences.

According to Channel24, the host of the show, Reverend Doctor Tebo Moema, says the show was inspired by attitudes towards the LGBTI community.

“I think this negative notion is informed by different cultures and religions and people needed a different voice to disrupt the human thinking,” he says.

Openly homosexual and having come out to his family and friends 20 years ago, Dr Moema says criticism is nothing new to him. “I have been told I am the devil’s advocate, a false prophet but I am strong enough and sober enough to understand,” he says.

Dr Moema has been a victim of discrimination and his ministry, Dominion Life, has come under fire. “The church should be a school of love. I found my liberty many years ago and I never backed down. This show will bring a big change in the attitudes of people in South Africa,” he says.

Catch I was In the Closet on Mondays at 9.30pm on GauTV (DStv channel 265).
