Tabane completed his primary and secondary education in Lichtenburg, before going on to study journalism at Rhodes University in Grahamstown. After completing his studies, he worked as a journalist for a number of South African media outlets, including The Sunday Times, The Sowetan, and The Star.

Dr Onkgopotse JJ Tabane holds a PHD from Wits University. He also holds a BA,
BPROC and MA degrees from UNIN, UWC and NMMU.
