A partnership between Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Unitaid and the London School of Hygiene and tropical medicine has brought back season 2 of the much loved MTV Shuga Down South.

sapositivenews.com has revealed that the cast of the new season sees the return of some of season 1 cast members such as Thuso Mbedu and Jemima Osunde of MTV Shuga Naija.

The first season aired in 2017 and season 2 is coming on February 12, 2019. “The movement was created out of a passionate and purpose driven vision”, said VIMN Africa’s Communications Director Fatima Beckham. “The 3 year partnership has been created to introduce and evaluate story-lines on HIV innovation including HIV self testing and preventative drugs into the award winning MTV drama series Shuga”, she added.

Alex Okosi, VIMN Africa Managing Director says MTV Shuga has been an incredible powerful movement. “What’s really powerful about Shuga is that it’s not just a drama series but was crafted to be something that would resonate with our young viewers who watch our channels. It has an amazing storyline and relatable characters dealing with tough issues that young people face but deals with it in a very authentic way”.

THE RISE AND RISE OF CLAYTON BOYD

Clayton Boyd from Generations

Clayton Boyd is currently starring in the hit South African soap opera Generations: The Legacy, one of the country’s most popular series with nearly nine million viewers, which has also been broadcast in countries such as India and Jamaica.

He will also soon be seen in Patrick Garcia’s horror film Hell Trip – which premieres at Comic Con Africa on September 14 in which he stars alongside Jonathan Boynton-Lee, Jay Anstey and American actor Stevel Marc.

Says Boyd about his role in Generations: The Legacy: “I play teacher Robert Carlson. There are things about to happen that will change his life forever. I can’t reveal too much at this stage but the subject matter is explosive and topical.”

Boyd has an impressive resume which includes roles in a host of popular TV series including Isidingo, Binnelanders, The Wild, Thola and MTV’s Shuga as well as the BBC series Leonardo.

Cape Town born Clayton achieved a double major BA in Psychology and Theatre from San Diego State University before moving to the University of Alabama and the Alabama Shakespeare Festival for his Masters degree. In 2006 he received his MFA in Theatre with an emphasis in Shakespeare.

In an in-depth interview in Amsterdam during the International AIDS Conference, Charlize Theron and Elton John sit down with the MTV Staying Alive Foundation and MTV Shuga stars Stephanie Sandows who plays Tsholo and Given Stuurman who plays Reggie.

Scandal! actress Stephanie also starred in MTV Shuga Season 5. She played a 15 year old character, Tsholo, aspires to having all the good “things” in life and decides to get them through a transactional relationship.

Given Stuurman, who also stars on Scandal! starred in MTV Shuga Season 5. Reggie, who was not attracted to girls, was grappling with understanding his sexuality.

MTV Shuga launches three new campaigns in South Africa and Cote D’ivoire, focusing on HIV Prevention and Self-Testing.

Unitaid, the MTV Staying Alive Foundation (MTV SAF) and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine today announced a three-year partnership to introduce and evaluate storylines on HIV innovation, including HIV self-testing and preventive drugs (PrEP) into the award-winning drama series MTV Shuga.

The programme is designed to help millions of young viewers in French- and English-speaking Africa protect themselves from HIV. This follows recent airing of MTV Shuga Season 6 “MTV Shuga Naija” on MTV Base (DStv channel 322) earlier this year.

The effort, unveiled during the 22nd International AIDS Conference, will span Southern Africa and Western francophone Africa and deliver three new TV series of MTV Shuga, together with a multi-media campaign that promotes sexual health. The enhanced programme will target hard-to-reach populations, particularly people 15 to 24 years old.
