For the past two years the awards were hosted by the City of Durban (eThekwini Municipality) in KZN and now for the first time, the awards were held, Wednesday on 14 November in Gauteng’s City of Ekurhuleni at Emperors Palace.

“We are very excited that we were able to bring the awards to Johannesburg. We hosted the awards successfully in the sunny City of Durban for 2 years and being able to bring the awards to the City of Gold has made the awards fully inclusive. We are hoping to take the awards to a new city every 2 to 3 years to ensure we leave our footprint in different regions.” said CEO and founder Winnie Ntshaba.

Out of the eighteen categories awarded, seventeen of which were adjudicated by a panel of judges. Seven categories covered creative and technical aspects while the rest recognised achievements in acting.

The seventeenth category was left in the hands of the public as they chose Most Popular Soapie of the Year. The eighteenth category, Lifetime Achievement in the South African Soap Opera Industry was awarded by Royalty Soapie Awards EXCO to a person that has contributed significantly throughout his or her career to the development, upliftment and advancement of the soapie (small screen) industry.

Mzansi Magic’s Isibaya swooped up a total of four wins out of twenty nominations, following closely and with three wins each was Binnelanders and Isidingo.

The playing field was levelled as most soap operas that participated walked away with a win.

“I am very pleased with the results and am very happy that most entrants were winners this evening. This would have not been possible without the support of our sponsors who value our creatives in the performing arts” said Ntshaba.

SA Film Wins in Europe to Close Out Festival Run with Clean Sweep

SA film STROOP, Bonné de Bod

The award-winning South African documentary film STROOP – journey into the rhino horn war finished its international premiere run this past weekend with impressive wins in Europe.

After leaving the US with a final win in Boston at the Mystic Film Festival for ‘Best International Documentary’, the film started its European premiere with a bang at the Wildlife Film Festival Rotterdam last week.

Selected to open the festival, the film secured another first by selling out the opening night. The choice of the South African film to open Europe’s prestigious wildlife film festival was a risky one, as the honour is usually given to a European film or an Oscar™ nominee but “the buzz around the rhino documentary made it a natural choice,” said festival director Raymond Laagerwald.

“We have followed the film’s progress through the years of filming and then seeing the final product, we picked it to open even before the Americans gave it so many awards, and that just confirmed what we already knew… that the film would do well here”.

The Dutch national broadcaster’s prime time news programme, Een Vandaag ran a feature about the film coming to the Netherlands which ensured a second sold out screening that the festival had put on to accommodate the hype around the film. It was no surprise then that the film won the coveted Flamingo Award, with the jury stating at the prize-giving ceremony: “This is an impressive and shocking film. The Jury believes the filmmakers, guided by the great main character Bonné de Bod, have managed to show us the immense complexity of the problem of rhino poaching. This body of work is a very powerful and emotional call to action.”

With over 120 films in competition, across a range of categories, the various juries, made up of film experts from home and afar did not have an easy task in selecting the Award winners.

This year’s festival once again focused a spotlight on various genres including documentary, feature and short films, as well as including themed awards such as Best LGBTQ, Best Asian Film, and a notable award for Best New Director.

CTIFMF Festival Director Leon van der Merwe had this to say of this year’s film selection, “The Festival Director would like to congratulate the winners and thank the various juries for the selection of the Awards. For more than a week the juries had the opportunity to watch films from around the world.

The juries were especially impressed by the Asian features from countries such as Thailand, the Philippines and Taiwan that offered innovative aesthetic approaches to the subject matter. It was also a pleasure to experience the focus on contemporary Italian and Romanian cinema. The entries from across Africa also increased this year both in quantity and quality and it is clear that African film is on the cusp of a major resurgence.”

The overall winner of the year’s Cape Town International Film Market and Festival, recipient of three awards including the most coveted award of the night, The Grand Prix, as well as awards for Best Director Award and Best Actor was the Italian film, Dogman. The film competed at this past year’s Cannes Film Festival where Marcello Fonte also won for Best Actor.

The CTIFMF’s Opening Film, and South Africa’s official official submission for the Oscar’s, Sew the Winter to My Skin, directed by Jahmil X. T Qubeka, won the Award for Best South African Feature Film, whilst Rehad Desai’s Everything Must Fall won for Best South African Documentary, and the Best South African Short Film was won by Rea Moeti’s Mma Moeketsi.

South African film Kanarie also took home the award for Best LGBTQ Film, while Kenyan Director of Supa Modo, Likarion Wainaina, won the award for Best New Director in the New Voices category and was described by the jury as “a true new voice of contemporary cinema. The director succeeds in bringing its audience into the shoes of a kid, showing us the world through her eyes, without ever trivialising nor overdramatizing a difficult topic such as a child’s illness. The director shows an uncommon capacity of leading his actors and keeping a difficult balance between drama, comedy and fairy tale.”

Hollywood’s Mudbound producer Kyle Tekiela presented the award to filmmakers Bonné de Bod and Susan Scott saying, “documentaries tell stories that bring big issues to light and the jury felt this was one of the biggest of them all, that poignantly conveys the struggle the world’s rhinos are having to remain alive for the next decade.”

The weekend was a winning one for the filmmakers as they also scooped an additional two awards – from the LA-based Glendale International Film Festival where they picked the Best Female Filmmakers award (a huge accomplishment given that over 130-films across fiction and documentary were in competition, which meant that STROOP was given the nod across all genres). And – also in LA – from the city’s premiere film festival, LA Femme, which supports women producers from around the world, De Bod and Scott were awarded the Special Documentary of Focus Award.

The previous weekend, the film received another nod in the form of Best Documentary award at the San Pedro International Film Festival, also held in Los Angeles, and last month, STROOP was handed the 2018 Green Tenacity Award by the judges of the San Francisco Green Film Festival.

Sadly though, the Mzansi Kwaito and House Music Awards would like to announce that Zola has pulled out as our host for the night and we unfortunately have to find his replacement despite paying him his deposit and later having him signing a contract we had already agreed to.

We are disappointed that one of our most loved Kwaito artist has made this decision without informing MKHMA management of the reason behind him having cold feet so close to our main event which will be hosted at the Top Arena in Carnival City but have decided not to take legal action against the Kwaito star as he is one of our own and we as the Mzansi Kwaito and House Music Awards will always support our local artists. “As disappointing as it is, Life goes on. I don’t hold grudges and May the Lord I serve bless him. We are ready for the 24th of November and we will be announcing our host soon” says MKHMA Founder and CEO, Perfecta Khumalo.
