What is MTN SIM Swap?
MTN SIM Swap is a cost effective service that allows MTN Pay as you Go Customers to keep their preferred MTN number. You can do a SIM swap if your old SIM card is lost, stolen or damaged or if you need a different size SIM for your new device.
If you want to do a SIM Swap on MTN, buy a MTN Pay as you Go starter pack and RICA your new SIM card. Remember to bring your ID and proof of residence or affidavit thereof.
How to Do a SIM Swap On MTN
If you HAVE your existing MTN Sim card and would like to keep your old number, follow these steps for a SIM Swap on MTN:
- Step 1: SMS ‘SIM Swap’ to 44770 from your existing SIM
- Step 2: You will receive a one-time PIN (OTP). which is valid for 15 minutes (save the OTP or write it down)
- Step 3: Then, from your new MTN Sim card, SMS the word ‘Swap’ and your ‘old number*OTP#’ to 44770. For example, if your MTN number is 073 123 4567 and the OTP you received is 1234, then you will need to SMS the following to 44770: Swap 0731234567*1234#
- Step 4: Once your old SIM card stops working, insert your new MTN sim card into your phone and switch it on
- Step 5: Your new SIM card will be ready and you can start making and receiving calls

If you DON’T your existing MTN Sim card and would like to keep your old number, follow these steps for a SIM Swap on MTN:
- Step 1: Insert your new SIM Card into your current or new device
- Step 2: Your number is 073 xxx xxxx. Press OK
- Step 3: Dial *135#, select Option 5 on the new SIM to start the MTN Sim Swap process
- Step 4: You will be prompted to enter the cellphone number for which you are doing the SIM Swap and the reason for doing SIM Swap
- Step 5: You will have to answer a set of security questions to continue with the SIM Swap
