Three Top Decor Trends That Excite Gen Zs

No other age group enjoys the confines of their own homes like Gen Z, with  70% of them preferring to stay in on weekends. As a generation that dislikes following convention or being predictable, keeping track of what decor they want in their rooms can be challenging.

To help you, Cebisa Zukelwa, decor trends specialist at Builders has compiled a list of some of the hottest home decor trends favoured by Gen Zs right now:

1. Comfort Is The Key

Being comfortable is at the core of everything a Gen Z wants when it comes to decor and furniture. That doesn’t mean they do not have certain aesthetic aspirations but they would much rather stream YouTube videos on a comfy bean bag or puffed armchair than a semi opaque stool crafted by some obscure Swedish designer. For example, with a home working space where one would prioritise functionality, Gen Zs prioritise comfort.

Top tip: If you’re redesigning a study or looking to create a office/work space in the bedroom, how you approach the project will be different for this consumer segment who would be more inclined to a stylish desk and chair options that can elevate the general look and feel of the room without sacrificing comfort. Whereas with the other generations a chair is a chair.

2. Stay Calm and Keep It [Boho] Chic

If you’ve got a Gen Z living in your house and are looking to spruce their room up then you are going to need to know a bit about “boho chic”. Centred around the idea of being easy going and colourful, boho chic is essentially the modernised version of the hippie aesthetic that was popular during the 60’s and 70s.

Did you know?: Tie dye is one of the trends that are associated with this aesthetic and anyone is able to make their own unique tie dye bed set for their homes. This video will teach you how and can be applied to curtains as well.

3. Different = Beautiful

There are few things this generational cohort loves more than being unique. Finding interesting and quirky ways to express themselves has become one of their hallmarks. The most exciting part of decorating is when you find something that is both functional and fashionable.

Expert advice: One cool way to help them do this is by creating your very own poster wall to accent the room. If you gather yourself a paintbrush, some wallpaper adhesive, a variety of posters and a few other items, you can easily create a feature wall that is as distinctive as your Gen Z is.
